We are a group of current and former bicycle mechanics eager to make bicycle mechanics a respected job in a diverse and inclusive sector. To do so, we’re reaching out to those in our industry to understand: what is it about bike mechanics? How do people learn to become bike mechanics? What are the issues they face? What do people love about the job? What issues do bike shops face? Why do bike mechanics leave the industry? Why do some of them stay? And why are wages so low?
We want to collect information and data to understand why the industry is the way it is, and find solutions to the barriers we face. We want to work together and engage everyone (mechanics, shops, government, academics).
As we dig into these questions, we start to dream about another way of doing things. The issues we uncover seem linked to affordability, repair economy, investment in a diversity of trades, barriers for small businesses, seeing cycling as a viable mode of transportation, and so much more!
Do you also ask yourself these questions? How can we come together to address some of these sticky issues, while supporting an industry we love?
